Course description:
Laban for Actors, Level I - A foundation course for actors in the core principles of Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals, the course will employ praxis (applied theory) to give actors an essential working knowledge of the core Laban principles of Body, Effort, Shape and Space as they apply to: embodied character development, embodied voice, textual phrasing and inflection, and the actor's relationship with the performance space.
Students will be introduced to basic Laban notation as a symbolic language for describing movement.
Classes will combine theoretical discussion based on reading assignments from Laban's work and works of Laban successors with applied movement experience guided by the instructor. Homework will include reading, reflective journaling and observation of real life movement. The course will consist of 10 lessons conducted
online, in live time, and will culminate in a mini movement project for each student.
This course is Level I (Introduction) of a series of courses on Laban/Bartenieff through which students can become increasingly proficient in the application of Laban to the craft of acting.
Level I will focus on the actor’s understanding of their own personal movement patterns which is an absolutely necessary foundation for creating the movement patterns of a character.
The first five classes (November 2, 4, 11, 18 and 25) will cover the history and lineage of Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals as supporting principles for understanding Body, Effort, Shape and Space, Embodied Anatomy and Developmental Movement Patterning.
The second five classes (Spring 2021) will continue with the above curriculum and apply some foundational concepts of Body, Effort, Shape and Space to a minimovement project culminating in shared presentations and witnessing in class 10.
